Pearl Mist Resumes Service Ahead of Summer Program in the Great Lakes

Pearl Mist was laid up in Nova Scotia (Shelburne) until a settlement was reached in 2013. The vessel was accepted by the shipowner and towed to Baltimore MD in April 2013. The cruise ship received final outfitting at Chesapeake Shipbuilding's yard in Salisbury MD. The 210-guest Pearl Mist is one of the most comfortable cruising vessels in the world, providing an exceptional luxury experience in an intimate, relaxed setting. The cruise also features a full transit of the St. Lawrence Seaway, a system of locks, canals, and channels that connects the Atlantic Ocean and the Great Lakes. Sailing roundtrip from Portland, the 210-guest ship is returning with a cruise to Maine and Canada.

Canada & New England Fall Foliage Cruise

Most days, Pearl Mist spends half to three-quarters of a day in port, leaving several hours of the day with little to do beyond attend a lecture, read a book, play cards or chat with friends. Even on days when the ship is in port longer, excursions are only a few hours and unless you want to shop 'til you drop or dine in port, you'll probably return to ship before it sets sail. With a maximum of only 210 passengers, daily cocktail hours and open seating at all meals, Pearl Mist makes it easy to meet every one of your shipmates. You'll meet educated people from all walks of life, many of whom have led a fascinating existence. End your amazing journey in Toronto, established as a Native American settlement and French fur trading post. Within its impressive skyline, there are several cultural hotspots including art galleries, museums, and performance centers.

For us (as well as the Glenns and the Glicks), one of the highlights of the Great Lakes itinerary was our stop on Mackinac Island. As the gateway to Lake Superior through the Soo Locks that rise 21-feet from Lake Huron, the town was once a thriving port town. After setting sail with a stunning Toronto skyline view, we spent our first afternoon and evening transiting the eight locks of the Welland Canal, with the ship rising 325 feet from Lake Ontario to Lake Erie.

Along the shores of Lake Michigan, Muskegon is a former timber town that has developed into a summer lake community. The complimentary trolley passed by all the highlights including the Victorian era restored Hackley & Hume homes, several museums and an art gallery. Once back at the Detroit pier, located right downtown on the Riverwalk, we were treated to a concert of some of Motown greats by local musicians as we literally danced in the streets. With this being our first visit to Cleveland, we couldn’t miss the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

From eye-popping street art and jazz clubs to vintage cars and impressive art deco architecture, the city is vibrant, progressive, and charming. Shop for art, jewelry, artisan crafts, and more at the Eastern Market, the largest historic public market district in the United States, dating back over 150 years. Visit the renowned Detroit Institute of Arts, a remarkable museum located in the heart of Midtown with more than 65,000 works. For some exercise, take a walk along The Dequindre Cut Greenway, a two-mile urban recreational path that offers a pedestrian link between the East Riverfront and several historic neighborhoods. At more than 300 square feet, the large and gracefully appointed staterooms mirror those of a world-class hotel and surround you in a warm and inviting atmosphere. This was especially tiresome when the cruise director took several hours out of our sailing on two occasions for future cruise bookings. On most itineraries, the ship calls at a new port every day, thus leaving little time for onboard activity. Before or after the port visits, tourists can attend an expert talk on the region's history, geography and culture. Furnishings throughout the ship are elegant and comfortable with a variety of spacious lounges to fit every mood – from the quiet library to the social atmosphere of the Atlantic Lounge. The Pearl Mist also features open sundecks, a library, a fitness area, and a glass-enclosed spacious dining room.

Both categories (K and L) are with floor-ceiling sliding glass doors and private step-out balconies. One Cat K stateroom (#411, midship-portside) is larger and wraps around the ship's elevator. Explore the Îles de la Madeleine Archipelago, an exotic miniature paradise featuring a treasure trove of tasty, tempting locally produced foods, and where the warmth and generosity of the inhabitants are legendary. During the Flavours Circuit, meet with several local producers and discover the passion and love that they have for their work, including the Pied de Vents Cheese Factory and a local apple orchard, the only one located on the archipelago.
